Title: Insights into pathogen-host response from structural biology
Host: Melanie Cocco
Abstract: Atomic resolution structures are essential for understanding protein interactions for pathogen response and related pathologies. The innate immune system is responsible for mounting the first line of defense against invasive pathogens and can also be activated by internal stressors. For example, the ectopic deposits that form in age-related diseases are rich in blood proteins involved in innate immunity, and this has been proposed to reflect an immune response to yet unidentified stress cues. Structural biology methods – NMR, crystallography, cryo-EM and MD simulations – combined with functional assays provide insights to the molecular interactions that are central for these processes.
