We’re Training the Next Generation of Biologists
The UC Irvine Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences was founded on an innovative principle: our departments were organized to encourage flexible scientific inquiry rather than the static approach of classical topics. This unique structure encourages faculty teamwork and has contributed to our ascent as one of the nation’s top research institutions.

A Message From the Department Chair
Biochemistry and molecular biology are fundamental tools in our search for a deeper understanding of the mechanistic principles that govern nature. In the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry we use these tools in fields as diverse as immunology, parasitology, and virology; vascular biology, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease; bacterial metabolism, drug discovery and structural biology.
Our faculty, staff, students and fellows are dedicated to the three fundamental pillars of our University – Research, Teaching and Service. Our distinguished faculty includes a member of the National Academy of Sciences, several fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Chancellor’s Professors and Chancellor’s Fellows. Five of our faculty have won the School’s Golden Apple Award for Excellence in teaching, and both our undergraduate and graduate students have won awards for their research and their commitment to teaching the next generation of scientists.
We love what we do and are lucky to do it. Welcome to MB&B – Where Discovery Begins!
